I've recently switch to iCloud Calendar (and Contacts) from Google. My primary Apple ID (and email address) is still my Gmail address, my secondary is @me.com, and my alternate is @icloud.com. Calendar invites sent to any of the addresses from Outlook or Hotmail arrive as emails and an ICS file attached. They do not pop up as alerts. Updates to the events also arrive by email and even tapping the ICS file does not update the name/time, etc. (or whatever was changed) as intended.

Yet, if sent an invite from iCloud to my work Exchange address, I get the in-app notification and it's automatically added to my calendar. I assumed this behaviour was supposed to work both ways when an ICS file was attached.

Is there a trick to getting this working that I am missing? I have checked the "In-app alerts" setting in iCloud and it is configured correctly.

Still having problems with this. Driving me nuts.

Updates to calendar events simply do not work. When I open the ICS attached to the email, it does not show any of the changes. Yet when I do it on my MacBook using Calendar, it will update correctly.

Well, after 3 hours of Apple Support, we eventually got iCloud-to-iCloud invites working correctly.

However, invites from other providers do not work very well. They always arrive by email with an ICS file, which works, but once you accept the ICS file, the iPhone DOES NOT recognize future updated ICS files as changed, so there is absolutely no way to accept an update to an event, like a name or time change. Frustrating.

Going back to Google Calendar. Its ability to automatically add any event that you receive an ICS file for by email to the calendar is excellent.

Thanks for sharing. I recently left google for icloud. i haven't had any calendar issues yet. don't think this will be a game changer. i will have to test out making changes and see what happens. thanks again.

Just tested what you said for myself.... ugh!!! That's a real bummer but still not a complete game changer yet as I usually only receive invites from my wife and her icloud account. We'll see...

Sorry to hear that. I really only use it with the girlfriend and it was annoying enough to be a game changer.

Essentially, anything other than iCloud to iCloud does not work properly.

iCloud -> Hotmail: arrive by email with ICS instead of an invitation
Hotmail -> iCloud: arrive by email, and any ICS file updates do not show

iCloud -> Exchange: arrive by email with ICS instead of an invitation
Exchange -> iCloud: arrive by email with ICS instead of an invitation

Hotmail -> Gmail: receive correct calendar invites and updates
Exchange -> Gmail: receive correct calendar invites and updates
Gmail -> Hotmail: receive correct calendar invites and updates
Gmail -> Exchange: receive correct calendar invites and updates

Decided (again) to return to google. Just works prefer it more. And the whole iCloud calendar thing is just annoying.

Probably for the best. All I'm using iCloud for now is Safari, Passbook, Photos, Docs & Data, and Find My iPhone.

The only issue I've been having with Google is contact pictures. When I set a contact picture from my phone, Google rotates it sideways. Annoying, but less so than the iCloud Calendar!

Exactly my setup... and have noticed the photo thing as well. Why can't the 2 just place nice!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but this is still not sorted... I thought the beauty of Apple stuff was it "just f... works" - well I see that's only apple to apple of course - FBI / Keep it in the family

This sort of cr@p is so trivial to fix but is one of the annoyances of Mac / Apple... So, sod this for a game of soldiers, I'm going back to gmail too, cap in hand :(

ETA - ehh, no I'm not... can't get gmail to work either, only receive the daft email with .ics attachment too...
Works fine with the gmail app but that's a pita, I want to, and will, use the native mail app & cal on the iphone...

This really is becoming ridiculous... The days when I had gmail as the primary mail / contacts / calendar set up as an exchange server with caldav sync were the best - now it's just a mess...

Gmail isn't perfect but what it will do is auto-add any ICS files you receive to your calendar, even if you don't use their app. It updates them as well should an update be sent your way. With iCloud, I can't find a way to accept changes to an updated event in my calendar whatsoever which makes it just a tad more useless.

Just starting to come across this issue now when I was looking to move over to iCloud. Is everyone else still having the behaviour still?

Also notice if I send invites to Google or Exchange, the invitee has to click on the web link and open the file (and doesn't get updates to the invite), whereby if you use google or exchange, they seem to be able to communicate much better with each other. Seems very odd as a final solution.
