iCloud Car Stereo Compatibility

Hello everybody,

I am having a problem with my wife's car stereo being able to play music through the iCloud. I just purchased her a new Alpine stereo that is iPhone compatible. When we connect it, it plays the music that is on her iPhone just fine. However, when we try to play something through the iCloud, the music doesn't show up. I spoke with Alpine and they said it will only play the music that is physically on her iPhone.

I was wondering if anybody else has had this problem and what you did to be able to get it to work.

I would hate to have to return her stereo.

I have the same problem in my 2011 Dodge Caliber stock system(non touchscreen) It see's the songs on the phone but not the cloud. :-\

I understand, but I was wondering if anybody HERE knew of a work around. This seems like it might be a big issue when people start using the icloud to stream their music more and more.

I thought that you can stream your music collection from the iCloud. My wife has the iPhone, not me, but she said that this was possible like the Android Music Beta or the Amazon Music. Is she wrong?

Icloud doesn't stream music. It will keep it available for you to download to your phone at anytime, but you have to do that before you can listen to it.

Well, when you select a song that's not physically on the device, it will begin playing and downloading to the device. It's unlike Google Music in that regard.

On a Mac, any cloud-stored songs will (by default) stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button. On an iOS device, though, you’re required to download the track in full—possibly so that you’ll be able to listen to that song even if your network connection shorts out. Your track will start to play before it finishes downloading, so you’ll be able to listen to any track you pick almost immediately. Apple TVs only have the option to stream songs, as they don’t have any storage capability.

It will be a real PITA for Apple to get songs which physically aren't on an iOS device to be displayed on the head unit to initialise the downloading process. I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets implemented.

Honestly, streaming music from the cloud for use through a car stereo won't work unless you use connect audio-out from the iPhone to your head unit's audio-in port.

Well, thanks for all the info guys. I thought I understood how it worked, but obviously I was wrong. I understood "download" for "stream". At least I now have a definitive answer.

Here's a possible workaround. On my Kenwood receiver, it only shows the music actually on the device, but if I start a playlist, the iPhone will pull down the music that's not on the device as it gets to them in the playlist.

In fact iCloud streams, but for iOS devices it also downloads the music. But as you wrongly noted, you don't have to download first to hear it, it streams while you download.

If you have different computers on a iMatch library you will promptly see it streaming, not downloading, the music. The downloading part is iOS only "feature". It is probably the best solution, since would hurt data plan for most users on 3G connections.

As far for the OP question, i think your player is working as intended. I'm not sure if there is a car player with cloud compatibility on the market atm. I may be wrong.
