More and more people are reporting this weird "too many hops" error when sending email to their custom domain.

The consensus is that it only affects older iCloud users who joined the service during either iTools, .Mac or MobileMe days. In other words, if your iCloud email address has either @mac.com or @me.com alias (in addition to @icloud.com), you are affected. If your iCloud email address only has @icloud.com ending, you are not affected.

Only Apple can fix this. There's nothing you can do, except report it.

UPDATE

There is at least one user with @mac.com alias who says he's not affected and that his custom domain works fine.

That means the above theory as to who is affected and who is not is wrong. But still report it to Apple, please.

I have:
- Mac.com
- me.com
- iCloud.com
- multiple aliases with custom-domain1.com
- multiple aliases with custom-domain2.com

My AppleID has been changed in the past and is now equal to my first alias with my first custom domain.

works without any issues. Family sharing works also since several days.
Only issue is on non beta devices, that my first created alias on my first added domain is not selectable for sending (all other aliases with custom domain are selectable). On beta devices everything is smooth.

I wonder if it’s possible the issue depends on where we buy the domains from? It seems different providers have different ways of setting it up. For example I had to add the SPF and key both as TXT files in a way that seemed strange.

I’d be inclined to agree.. and I’d be interested to know if anyone has this working on a Fasthosts domain without the too many hops error

I am new iCloud user for just a few years and I have the issue of going through Mac.com and me.com.

if we think it is a Domain Registrar thing which registrars work?

I also wonder if it happens if you add more than one domain. For example I added 5, removed them again and added them again.

The Internet DNS system is standard so if different registrars vary too much the internet wouldn’t work. An SPF record is a TXT record.

Apple will get this working, it’s just a major bug in the beta right now. I really wonder why they didn’t partner with Hover or Bluehost or GoDaddy to automatically setup the custom domain. Other services do partner like this.

I have a Mac.com iCloud address and my custom domains work fine. No issues sending and receiving mails.

Anyone have a fix for this?

I've deleted and re-added my domain, it showed up right away on iPhone/iPad and Mac Mail but not on iCloud.com Beta. It just showed up in iCloud.com Beta this morning but I'm still getting the hops error when sending to the email address. I have no issues sending mail.

I'm still getting the too many hops error, so I thought I'd set up a new domain with a different ISP (GoDaddy) this morning to test it. I can't even seem to add it as a custom domain now - "there was a problem adding the domain, try later". Anybody seen this ? The first one was added fine albeit with the too many hops issue.
(Incidentally GoDaddy are offering domains at £0.86 at the mo, one per customer in case anyone needs one)

I just tested again with the domain I had set up a while ago and it's working now. Seems like Apple pushed a fix.

Seems to be working for me too. My only issue is all the domains I added (and deleted) are still showing up on my devices and in Mail on beta.icloud.com. They are not showing up in the custom domain section in settings. Any idea how to delete?

Thanks for the update guys. I’m gonna try again.
Working great on my end. The whole process is a lot smoother.

I'm having the same issue. Custom domain email addresses are still showing up on all of my devices, even though they've been long deleted and domain name removed from iCloud.

You don’t need to use the beta site anymore so just try from regular icloud.com. I wonder if adding them again and then deleting them again would work?

Yes I have the same problem. I even had it go away for a little bit (and the emails started bouncing back as no user by that name) but then it magically appeared. I guess early adopter problems. Also I have an @me account and didn't have the "too many hops" issue.

It's been over a week since my initial call with Apple Support. They are aware of the problem but have no timeframe for a resolution. Has anyone who's been experiencing the issue of addresses they have deleted that keep coming back figured out a solution?

Doesnt seem to be one right now. I delete the address, and for about 24 hrs stays deleted, emails even kicked back. But then the next day the emails start going through again and eventually even shows back up on the mail.app drop down menu. Also if you have your domain shared across the a family account, you cannot add the email to a different iCloud on the same family.

Have also problems with iCloud custom domain emails:
1.) email addresses which I have long deleted still show up
2.) IMAP settings and iCloud settings seem out of sync
3.) Family sharing seems not to work anymore so if I setup a custom domain email for my wife the email address doesn't work, whereas it works for me. So it seems the mapping is broken.

Seems to early to use it for production email and we can test further until apple fixes it.

Has anyone been able to fix the issue with deleted emails coming up? My Apple Support case has been open for almost 3 weeks and there has been no progress.

I was able to solve this problem in my case. What I figured out was that pre custom domains I'd been forwarding my iCloud email to my custom domain email hosted elsewhere. When I transferred it over to iCloud the redirect was still in place. So it was redirecting to itself. I found the setting on mail in iCloud.com. FWIW I had to change it to a different email before I could remove the redirect entirely. Hope that helps.
