iCloud iCloud+ / Custom Domain / Requirements?

I’m trying to setup custom domain with iCloud+ but am only given the instruction links at beta.icloud.com

Do I need to have an iCloud email address before I can setup custom domain?

My current Apple ID is the email I want to use.

If you have domain name purchased, the only thing missing is to go to the Custom Email Domain section in your iCloud account and follow the prompt steps there.

Has anyone gotten this custom domain to verify or work? I switched over from Google domains to domain.com, and have Squarespace website. I have not been able to set up custom domain with iCloud+. My friend says Apple is knocking out their DNS propagations.

What domain hosting plays well with iCloud? I have been on the phone with Apple support but they are really familiar with the custom domain yet.
