iCloud - "Documents & Data"

Hi all:

I was thinking about the option in iCloud settings to back up "Documents & Data" -- what exactly does that include? I know the description says "Allow apps to store documents and data in iCloud", but in other words, would this mean if I were to get a new iPhone, set it up as a brand new phone, reinstall the same apps, enable this "Documents & Data" option in iCloud, would all my app settings/scores and things be there waiting for me? Or am I just turned around on how that whole process works?

I'm using an iPhone 4 16 GB, AT&T, with iOS 5.1.

They would be for any app that does that. Not all devs set up data in the cloud.

What you want to do for that is iCloud Backup. Then you'd set up the new phone as a 'restore from backup' and you'd get this result.

What 'Documents and Data' is for is syncing data across multiple devices at the same time. Like, an iPad and an iPhone.

But whereas 'Backup' works for everything, 'D & D' only works for apps that have been programmed to do so. For me, right now, that's only 5 apps:

iPhoto
SoundHound
iTunes Movie Trailers
Doodle Jump
Circadia

So not a widely used feature yet. I suspect Mountain Lion will make it more popular once it interacts with people's Macs too.

To follow on. Let's say you play a game on your iPhone, then move to your iPad, you would be able to carry on from where you were in the game.

The only other way is for the game to sync to a third party server.

Same with other data, such as notes or drawing applications.

Interesting. That's good to know. To be honest, I was kinda under the impression that anything listed under the apps under Settings -> General -> Usage, then any of the Apps that listed "Documents & Data" would be backed up with iCloud.

That really does make more sense though. Thanks guys.

So what do I need to do to synch [backup?] a particular iWork document among my Mac, MacPro, and iPad - but not my iPhone?

I don't want to backup everything.
