iCloud Drive storage question

I was wondering, when you store files on iCloud Drive in Yosemite, are the files also locally stored?

I'm asking because I'm getting myself a new rMBP. If I like it, and decide to keep it, if I do 200gb of iCloud Drive, I'll plan to have all my data stored there. However, I keep all my data on a separate partition (to reduce chances of corruption from the user account).

My question is, would the data I upload to iCloud Drive be kept locally on Yosemite, or would it be online only? I don't want storage to be limited due to everything being on iCloud Drive AND on my other partition (I've got 512GB for the SSD space, and about 150GB of data).

Does that make sense?

1. If you delete the file on your computer, it will be deleted from the cloud.
2. You cannot move the file away from your primary drive to eg. partition or external drive.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. The question I'm trying to ask is:

If I upload all my files (from my other partition) to iCloud Drive, would those files also remain on the computer, or once they're uploaded, would they be deleted? I don't want a "double" copy of all my files (one on iCloud Drive, one on the partition) - I just want the files uploaded to iCloud Drive, then be deleted locally (so the original copies only remain).

The only way to not have the copy on your local drive is to uncheck that particular app in 'iCloud drive documents and data' for that particular computer. I would do a test run with a single file to see that it works the way you want it to.

How can I select an app if it's just a file of mine, not associated with a specific app?

If you have a file that doesn't have an assigned app then in my tests, the file follows the synchronisation rules without a way to control it.
