Found this on apple community and it worked for me

I did fix it on my iPhone, but with no additional SMTP servers, no delay, and instant recieve and send, I will tell you how:

Go to Settings > mail > contacts > calenders > icloud > account > mail > SMTP > Add Server... (Make sure to delete any other SMTP Servers first, or disable them)

Add the following details:
Host Name: smtp.me.com
User Name: your full email account, including domain (Ex: john@me.com)
Password: type your email password

After a moments, the dialog will disappear as if nothing changed, but it will be fixed.

Enjoy...

Yes..but I still have to leave Mail in the background to receive emails. I closed the Mail and I did not received nothing.

The fix is ok but you have to leave your Mail open in the background.

I'm actually looking for a fix for the iCloud @me.com email address. I would like it to push like how gmail is set up with exchange. It's frustrating that I have to open up the mail app every time I need to check my mail. Is there a fix for it or is it just what it is at the moment?

You do not have to open it every time..just leave it open and you will receive your mail instantly.

oh yeah i guess you are right so I wonder what the permanent fix is.

Yeah, this doesn't exist on my iPhone. I'm not able to change any server setting for my iCloud account under mail settings.

Which now that I look at it, I don't even have the iCloud @me.com email account in the Mail app at all. WTF???

Which really sucks, because I am not getting ANY email from my iCloud @me.com account on my phone. There are new emails in the account, but they're not coming over to the phone.
