I was moving a bunch of emails into the archive folder, and deleting some emails in Mail(El Cap), when it chucked a fit.

Now I old emails(which were not involved in what I was doing) duplicated between my archive and inbox folders. Emails which i had moved to the archive folder are back in my inbox (while also being in my archive folder). And emails with a few image attachments taking up a lot more space than they should. As a result my iCloud account is full, and i'm not sure what to do.

Whats going on? and does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Cheers

Does anyone have any idea whats going on? I've been frantically trying to delete messages with attachments and archive messages from my inbox, but the amount of space used by mail has ballooned from less than 5GB to 8GB!!

Some email messages which have a couple of attachments totally 14MB are listed as being over 250MB!

An update.

I've been frantically trying to get past this issue. In short, a completely wasted weekend.

I moved many old emails to an "On My Mac"(local) folder, which presumably removes them from iCloud. That managed to get the usage down to 5.25GB. When I check the size of the email folders in Mail.app, the total, comes to 3.25GB but iCloud is reporting that Mail uses over 5GB.

This has all been extremely frustrating as I have been using my iCloud email as my primary email for over 10 years, and I cannot understand why on Friday night my iCloud usage was under 5GB, and after moving some emails to the "archive" folder, the usage balloons to over 8GB.

This is email, not rocket science FFS. I'm going to stop using iCloud for email, and revert to Hotmail which I have been using for much longer with fewer issues like this.

Does anyone know an Apple support number I can call in the US for iCloud/email issues?

Is it safe to sign out of iCloud on my iPhone & iPad and then sign back on?

(Seems like a no-brainer, but you never know whats going to happen with something so simple these days)
