I have tried to set up an iCloud email address but when I am asked to choose an icloud.com address, whatever I type in, I get a message saying that the address is already in use, so I tried to send a test email to the iCloud address I wanted. However, I could only send it from one of my previously registered addresses. It came back to me, which I thought suggested I could use that address. Only trouble is, I can't get it to show in Mac Mail. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone enlighten me please?

There’s no way the message is accurate for “whatever” you try to set up, so you must be setting it up wrong. The message text is a red herring.

The question is what are you actually trying to do. Set up an icloud account in syspref or iOS Settings? Create a new @icloud.com alias for your current icloud email that is already in Mail?

(In the case where an icloud.com address is in fact taken, it’s still possible to get undeliverable results if the prefix is parked on by old dotmac/me accounts that haven’t been logged into since Jobs was alive.)

Hello Brian, I didn't think I already had an iCloud email address set up but I have tried sending a test email from and to myself using the email address I wanted and it came back using my temporary Gmail address. I can't get the email box to show in Mac Mail. Perhaps I am just not understanding what I need to do.

Let's take a step back.

1. Do you own iOS products? It seems that you do
2. From a browser, browse to icloud.com and log in with your credentials (your Apple ID)
3. Within the settings of your Apple account, check what email addresses (icloud.com addresses), that you do own

Unless, I do not understand the issue.

I think I have an answer. Having established I could use the iCloud address I wanted, I was told by Apple Support, that I could send an email with that From address but an answer would associate itself with one of my other email addresses and show as if it had come from that address.
