I love Apple, I do, but this is a bad one

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, and let iCloud kick in with it's default settings.

Excluding email, my contacts, calendar and documents were automatically synced from my MBP up to the iCloud

Since not all are required on iCloud, I disabled the calendar and as a result all my iCal events were DELETED !!! (someone wrote that if you write "calendars" in spotlight, it will take you directly to your latest iCal file for restore - AND IT WORKED)

Now I wish to disable syncing my documents to iCloud, but receive a warning that should I decide to do so, ALL MY SYNCED DOCUMENTS WILL BE ERASED FROM BOTH iCloud AS WELL AS MY MBP !!!

Why? Why delete my local copy? it was locally and rightfully mine before iCloud kicked in :-(

If any one can help me getting out of this trouble, I will forever appreciate him/her/them/you/etc.
