iCloud is driving me up a wall

I recently purchased a Macbook Air and started to set it up today.

One of the first things I was asked for was my Apple ID, for which I used the Apple ID we use on iTunes for all of our iOS devices. Everything went smoothly.

Then, I tried to use Messages. When I first opened it up, I came across a bunch of text messages I didn't recognize - I knew the people, but the content wasn't mine. Then I realized it was syncing with my wife's iPhone.

How do I get rid of her iCloud stuff and replace it with mine? I know this should be very simple, but I've had a long and difficult day. I thought it would be relaxing to sit down with my new gadget and play for a bit, but I think I've hit the point where I'm not seeing the forest for the trees.

Best to do a fresh OSX install, Command-r while rebooting.

FYI, have a personal iCloud account for the mac and your iOS devices plus an iTunes purchases only account you share with your family.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. It took over an hour to migrate what I wanted from my iMac to the Macbook and then I installed MS Office and another program I need for work.

Not the end of the world, but I'd like to avoid that 2 hour or so ordeal.

I would make a new Apple ID for icloud stuff and use a family account for iTunes, like blueroom said. I don't see why you should reinstall.

I never thought of separating iCloud and the AppleID account before.

I am in the process of purchasing an iPad for my daughter, if I enter my AppleID into iOS to purchase apps will that iPad then sync everything else that iCloud does or can you control this?

I believe so. In the icloud settings, sign into your new Apple ID for icloud, and sign into iTunes and App Store in your current Apple ID. I haven't tried it yet, but it should work great.

Thanks, I guess I will have to organise to transfer my iTunes match account to a family account so that my daughter has access to the music collection.

I wish Apple had a simpler system in place for these accounts. I also drew the short straw using dot mac and mobile me before iCloud so now an my primary AppleID is xxxx@mac.com even though I do not own that email address anymore.
