iCloud isn't very cloudy at all!!

I thought the whole point of cloud storage was to have files accessible to you ANYWHERE and not just on iProducts...

Unlike mobileme and idisk, you can't even store photos or documents in the cloud? Or have your subscribed calendars sync? I have 2 Apple laptops and an iPhone so it's not as bad as if I'm coming from PC/Android world, but I'm still disappointed with the lack of online accessibility to photos and documents. I'd rather keep those stored online then on my devices themselves (a la dropbox).

Basically everything in iCloud was already made available by web-based email providers (i.e. gmail and hotmail), and they've just added in some syncing between iProducts and the ability to find your iProduct. Pretty disappointing.

I miss mobileme already.

No, that's just your interpretation of cloud storage. It does not have to be platform agnostic by any means.

Dropbox is such a good product. Free for most, affordable if you want more space. Fast. Platform agnostic. Reliable. Pretty much every feature you would ever need. I think Apple just thought "Why bother competing?".

My advice? Get a dropbox account: dropbox.com

Thanks for the referral, but I already have an account with Dropbox...I agree that it's an excellent product.

I was hoping icloud would be similar and let me sync photos and documents automatically from iPhoto and Pages to icloud.com (rather than just to my devices).

As I said, I only have Apple products to date, so it's not even a big deal to me that icloud only supports Apple products. But it is disappointing that there's no option to store your files online somehow, so that you don't have to keep them on any device.

iCloud is all about personal sync & backup, not about streaming and sharing.

You had not done your homework on iCloud hence your dissapointment is caused by your own misconceptions of how the product works

Actually, during my research I read this from the Apple site:

Since your mail, documents, Camera Roll, account information, settings, and other app data don’t use as much space, you’ll find that 5GB goes a long way.

5 gigs is a lot of space, so I thought maybe, just maybe, there'd be some media storage available since it said "Camera Roll" could be stored. I also interpreted that statement to mean that whatever was remaining of the 5 gigs after mail, settings, acct info etc, could be used somehow...maybe to store pictures or documents other than iWork files.


As it is right now, I don't see many people using all 5 gigs with the options that are available. But hopefully, one day, the ability to store more stuff will be there.
