After trialing iCloud+ with a custom/personal domain, I moved my email to a different service. In doing so, I enabled forwarding from iCloud to that custom domain address.

When I attempt to change the destination email address for forwarding in iCloud from a previous (Fastmail) address that was used before to the current (personal domain) email address, I receive an error stating:

Cannot Complete Request
Your request cannot be completed at this time. Try again later.

I have been attempting to do so for at least 1-2 weeks now.

Any thoughts on this one?

Exact same issue here (moved custom domain from iCloud to Fastmail). Can't set it up now as a forwarding target. Did you make any progress on this?

None yet, unfortunately.
Unfortunately what I had to do was set up a stupid double forward. I set iCloud to forward to my gmail which is set to forward to my domain. It’s ugly but it works.

Gonna try to get someone from Apple Support to understand what the issue is and pass it to engineering.

I am doing the same thing regarding a forwarding workaround. I wish you luck with Apple Support / engineering, as I would imagine you will get several people not realizing there is likely an underlying issue requiring engineering input. If you are able to make progress or get a resolution, would you be willing to share it here?

I tried to make the change again as of this post and receive the same error message, now weeks later.

Did anyone figure this out? I changed the host for my custom domain email and get the same message when I want to forward email for my iCloud address to the customer domain email address.

I never ended up contacting Apple, the thought if trying to explain this to several different people was enough of a deterrent. What I wound up doing was just creating an alias in my Fastmail account and forwarded my iCloud email to that.

For example, it would not accept [firstname]@domain.xyz as a forwarding target since that used to be hosted with iCloud. So in Fastmail I made a new email, forwarding@domain.xyz that links to my main email. I then set that as the forwarding target instead of my actual email. In the end there’s no difference, my iCloud email gets forwarded to my Fastmail inbox.

Seems like iCloud only won’t let you set the specific email address for forwarding, not the entire domain. See if your new mail provider lets you do aliases for your main inbox.

Interesting. That works for me as well, though I'd rather not HAVE to do it. I contacted their support to see if they can fix it. Until then, and alias is a good workaround.

Attempted to change the destination address again today and found this issue to be fixed for me. May be worth revisiting for those experiencing the same problem.
