I'm able to log in to my Apple ID, but that password doesn't work for my iCloud mail.

Are you able to log in to your Apple ID with that iCloud address and could delete it from there?

If you can't login to your Apple ID with it and delete it from there, it is a separate Apple ID what has a different password.

Or it's an Avatar from the main iCloud address, with that you cannot log in anywhere.

Also the server problems yesterday could be the cause.

Huh, that's a bit strange. What's after the @ in your email?

I just thought that could also be a problem to log in with a non-iCloud address on icloud.com, but it works.

Or if it's a 3rd party email client and two step or two factor authentication is enabled you have to set a special app password to get your mails.

Two factor authentication… is that the one where you are issued a single numeric "key", and if you ever lose that key, you basically can never recover your Apple ID account ever again?

Yes that's what I meant. Your explanation is not 100% correct but that case could happen under special circumstances.
