Is there any benefit from using my new @me.com address as the Apple ID for iCloud instead of my Gmail address, which is my main Apple ID for iTunes purchases (damn Apple and their insistence on not merging IDs)? I can't see any benefit but I haven't quite got my head around iCloud's intricacies just yet so might be missing something obvious?

Also I note in Apple's support they recommend that most users use the same email address for both iTunes and iCloud...why is this even though they also say that you can use different email addresses without losing any functionality in the same article?

You can't use your @me.com as an Apple ID unless you created a new Apple ID through iCloud. Otherwise your @me.com e-mail address is just an e-mail address—it's tied to your Apple ID, which is your gmail address. And it also contains your purchase history.

Yes, I realise that I can't use the @me.com as the primary address for iTunes etc. but is there any difference between using the @me.com as the login for iCloud and my Gmail (I notice that if you check the account details in iCloud it actually shows the @me.com address unlike in iTunes, where it shows the Gmail address even if you login with the @me.com due to the 2 being linked)?

Nope, there's no difference. They're tied together.
