I just rec'd a notice that my 5gb iCloud storage is nearly full. I only have 1 backup and a very few photos, totaling ~2.5gb.

However, I now see that Messages are taking up ~2.5gb, filling up my 5gb. I presume this is a function of the upcoming "messages in the cloud" capability.

I deleted all past Messages on my iPhone and Mac, clearing out every single past message/photo/video, but that space is still being consumed.

Does anyone know how can I reclaim that space?

Why would this be on without the ability to turn it off? Even turning backups off does not clear the messages.

I have the same. Never used an iOS 11 beta etc, it just appeared after updating to 11.3. The backup size for my iPad and iPhone have reduced in line with the space used for messages. Seems like messages in the cloud is working but not turned on.

Similar here. On my iPhone there is nothing visible but if I go to to settings>iCloud on my MBP there is a new green category called "Nachrichten" (which means "messages" in german) on iCloud and it takes nearly 120MB of storage.

I too got 1.8mb of messegess I don’t remeber if they were there, but I’m running iOS 11.3... I however do have an iPad I don’t use, maybe i need to check that out and dekete any messages.

I do know that iMessages are received on both my devices, so maybe that’s the reason I have it in my iCloud.

Something really odd is going on...and it looks like we are just in the midst of a programming change at Apple.

When I posted this the other day, I had roughly 2.4gb in backups and 2.3gb in messages. I've checked it every day since, and no change.

The morning, after seeing this forum, I checked and now have 2.14gb in messages and only 346mb in backups. I now have 2.4gb free.
