I'm mostly a Mac user but recently I built a PC for reasons that are pointless to explain in this thread.

Having mostly a good experience with everything iCloud and hating the Microsoft counterpart because I used both for years, I installed iCloud for Windows. And it works fine for the most part, I just don't get why it has to open itself on every boot and out of the blue on one occasion without me manually opening it:

The weird thing is that I had it installed since I built the PC in January, and the first few weeks it was doing this, then it stopped, and yesterday it started doing it again.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Yes happening to me as well, so you're not alone. But I wouldn't worry about it. Microsoft store shows it updated my icloud for windows app yesterday and that's when it started popping up for me every time I wake my pc from sleep. So just a bug in the update they'll fix eventually. icloud is working fine for me, just pops up to annoy us for now I guess.

Yeah, I guess, the problem is when are they going to fix it. The popular solution online that I get after every search is the same, to edit the Windows startup to remove iCloud from there. The thing is, I use iCloud all the time, and I assume that to sync it needs a background process open. So I don't want to prevent it from starting up, I just don't want it showing me the iCloud app unless I open it manually.

Your intuition is right, do not remove it from start up items, it needs to run to sync in the background. We’re just at apples mercy for them to fix the bug they created. The best way to report an issue to Apple regarding a windows app of theirs is apple.com/feedback

I did, a couple of days ago. It gets even more annoying because I just booted up my PC, after a while iCloud opened by itself, I closed it, and two minutes later it opened itself again.

Yeah it’s done that to me once or twice too 😂

It doesn’t bother me really, waiting until they fix it. But if I were to make a temporary solution, something you could try is maybe a powershell script that checks if the iCloud window is open then closes it, and you can schedule that script to run when waking from sleep using event manager (I think it’s called) in windows. I don’t know enough off hand to make that script but wouldn’t hurt to see if an ai tool could make a script that does that. Best of luck to you

I found that closing the window for a third time finally stops it. Though yes, on every reboot it appears at least twice.
