iCloud: "only devices using OS X 10.10 and iOS 8"

Changes to iCloud documents and data in “Numbers” on this Mac are only available on devices using OS X 10.10 and iOS 8.

Any changes from devices using earlier versions will not be available.
Changes will also not be visible to iCloud.com web applications.

That's what it says, when I for example start Numbers, Pages, Keynote or any other apps that use iCloud for synchronization.

I for example use "Day One" as a tool to write a diary. It states the same there too, and when I update "Day One" on my iPhone IOS7 it actually doesn't sync with my Yosemite computer DayOne version.

My Problem:
I myself can't update my iPhone to iOS 8 for the reason that my weird Japanese phone Data Plan does not work with iOS 8 Beta.
So now I have two different data sync's on computer and iPhone.
(I know I shouldn't use a computer I actually use everyday with a beta version of an OS, but I just like having Yosemite and I can live with the small "troubles" there are in a Beta version)

My Question now:
Should I do my DayOne entries only on my iPhone, or only on my Yosemite computer? When I update iOS7 later to iOS8, which data will be "dominant"? Is there a chance I lose my data that I get's synced to the "iCloud Beta"?
Or will I have the choice to choose?

What do you guys think?
Does anyone know what happens with that "Beta iCloud" data?

IMHO for now you should not use day one on 10.10 or iOS 8. Keep using the current version on 10.9 and iOS 7. Thats the only way for now to be sure your edits are safe.

When you launch a documents in the cloud app on iOS 8 (I've not tried 10.10 but the underlying issue is the same) you lose access to all your current docs and anything you create is only available to iOS 8 or 10.10. For something like pages or numbers where each document is a standalone file, thats one thing. In the case of an app like day one, you now have part of the data (your journal entries) in one place and the rest in another. There's no reason to expect a magical merge come GM.

For my testing I moved ALL of my Real iCloud Data into Dropbox since my applications support it. I now only use iCloud for TEST Data.

I noticed on my 10.10 install it has my iCloud account listed twice, one with a few ???s next to it. I think maybe they have a new implementation of it for 10.10/iOS8.

It seems to be separated as anything I do there stays there by itself and anything I have on iOS7/Mavericks is also still there.

In Finder I only have 1 iCloud Folder. But I do believe they have an iCloud area for the old and the new. I simply do not want my Real Data setup this way. I.E. Do not want two versions in separate iCloud locations. Again, only using iCloud now for Test. All of my real files are in DropBox. However, I am using iCloud as before for Mail, Contacts and Calendar on all of my devices with only minor problems (i.e. Mail Crashes).

iCloud Drive appears to be handled differently then iCloud Documents. This is merely an observation. If you are using your own personal data and aren't willing to or unable to commit to all of the beta's I'd say stay away for right now.

This is beta, and can and will have erratic results. I know it's been posted many many times in this forum, but it is the truth.

I haven't had a chance to use Yosemite yet, but there definitely appears to be some form of a migration that takes places between using legacy OS (iOS 7 and Mavericks now) and bleeding edge (iOS 8 Beta and Yosemite).

This isn't a dig to anyone, but the way iCloud seems to handle this data at least during this beta period does seem slightly different. Different enough where you shouldn't expect any consistent results while this is being worked on.

hopefully they fix those compatibility issues before the public beta gets released as there wont be an option for non devs to upgrade their iphone to the ios8 beta and will be stuck without access to their files.

It's hard to tell right now, but I imagine they would.

I believe there were dev versions of iCloud Photostreaming that had similar issues in previous versions of iOS.

If they are making major changes to icloud to make it work with iCloud drive it would make sense to have everyone migrate especially since it's a free upgrade for existing devices.

You can sync DayOne with Dropbox which won't care what OS you're on, you could use a free account which will be more than enough.

There is some small discussion here about weather beta data will remain or be purged prior to release.

• iCloud Documents & Data in iOS 8 Beta will only sync with devices running iOS 8 and OS X v10.10 Developer Preview.
• iCloud Documents & Data managed with iOS 7 or OS X Mavericks will remain unaffected.

Since Day One data is so important, not only should you switch to Dropbox syncing, but on your Mac, use Day One's built-in backup functionality. This'll save a local backup wherever you choose, and then if you backup that backup, you should be good. #

Just because any cloud is a scary place. Especially when juggling between beta and non-beta clouds, along with switching to other clouds.
