I understand that selecting "Optimize Mac Storage" in MacOS iCloud settings when syncing Desktop and Documents will cause iCloud to remove files from the local MacOS file system if the machine is low on space.

I assume, but have not been able to find any confirmation, if the Optimize setting is NOT enabled, all files will remain on the local file system and not be removed even to the point of filling up the drive. They stay there, period.

Is my assumption about not using Optimize correct?

I think you're correct about that, but I wouldn't fault you for insisting on confirming what seems to be the implication. The question seems to be "should macOS automatically remove files already stored in iCloud when your storage is low?" Clicking Optimize seems to be the user's way of answering "yes," and leaving it unchecked seems to be the user's way of answering "no."

Adam Christianson from the MacCast happened to discuss this in some depth on his most recent episode, starting at around 36:20: https://www.maccast.com/2019/02/24/maccast-2019-02-24/

Thank you for the podcast link. I listened to it and did some further reading of all the Apple support documents I could find on these options. None clearly indicate how the syncing is handled with "Optimize Mac Storage" unchecked.

While it probably is a safe assumption that files are not removed when the drive fills up, I find it frustrating that there is no clear information from Apple on such an important point. I like using the feature but must know that I remain in possession of my data so that I can be certain what my backups contain. It seems the only way to be 100 percent certain is to test this by filling up my drive. Something I don't want to do and should not have to do.
[doublepost=1551639634][/doublepost]I called Apple support and they confirmed that all documents stay on the MacOS file system and won't be removed with the Optimize setting unchecked.

Maybe I'm being a bit retentive on this, but the data is important. Also, what the heck I did invest in AppleCare so why not use it.
