iCloud Over rated and Over hyped?

icloud would probably get better in the future but I dont see nothing new that Gmail and Dropbox don't already do... You have to purchase iWork for thing to actually sync to all your devices to make it function as a dropbox contender.(im a Office guy) The whole itunes in the cloud is cool but its hoping you waste all your money on itunes...

I hope it gets better but im sticking with gmail and dropbox

iCloud, Gmail, Dropbox

Also SugarSync, Box, Evernote

I don't see it as an exclusive either/or arrangement at all

I like having a variety of choices

iCloud can back up your devices and locate them, and iCloud doesn't offer a service like Dropbox there's no need to include it in a comparison.

If you have Gmail and you already sync your contacts and calendars to it - that's great. That means you don't have to use those functions in iCloud. But it doesn't mean iCloud is useless for you, or that you have to choose one or the other.

iTunes match will sync music you haven't bought in iTunes, so that argument kind of fell flat on its face...

Agreed, and I'll add read about the service from the vendor. iCloud was over rated and over hyped by folks guessing about what it would do and "insider" mags/blogs that wanted attention.

I'm using it much less than I was with MobileMe. I moved over everything from Google to MobileMe a long time ago, but I've since moved most things back. MM mail was too restrictive, no smart folders, only 99 rules, etc so that was the first to go back. When MM moved to caldav I moved my calendars back to Google as caldav broke my syncing tools.

With the new iClouds only contacts I will now only be using Google for my contacts as the iClouds only solution has broken my social networking address book syncing tools and left me with duplicates. This one annoys me as I will have to manually manage my address book groups

And I guess next year I will be moving my iDisk and iGallery

I like it for having everything sync'd between Mac, iPad, iPhone. I did turn off Photostream & will just use dropbox for pics. I didn't like screenshots or silly pics from the Internet showing up. I would rather just have pics of the kids or other actual photos up there. I still think iCloud is great though to have everything sync'd up.

Use SugarSync instead, especially if you're only gonna use it for pictures.

iTunes match - will it only sync your music that you have bought off iTunes or will it also sync music that was not bought from iTunes store?

iTunes in the Cloud (free and active right now on everybody's iOS device on iTunes on PC/Mac) allows you to download every song you have ever bought through the iTunes store. It also allows you to automatically download any new songs you buy on all the devices that share your iTunes ID.

iTunes Match is a subscription service specifically for music that you didn't buy from iTunes. This service scans you music library and matches whatever ripped (or illegally downloaded) content you have against the iTunes database. If it find songs that are identical to those on iTunes, it will let all your devices download the iTunes-version for as long as your subscribed. Any songs it can't match against iTunes it will upload to the cloud so that you can download these tracks on any of your iOS devices, Macs and PCs.

Overhyped? What Apple product isn't overhyped? Overrated? No. Most level-headed people see iCloud for what it is: somewhat convenient, but definitely showing its lack of age and refinement.

Could not agree more. I for one will wait to see if they get things sorted out. I also want to watch for issues like we have already seen like iworks documents disappearing from the cloud. Things like that cannot be allowed to happen.
