iCloud Photo Scanning Taking Forever

I installed iOS 10 6 days ago (release day mid-day) on my iPad Pro.
iPhone 7 was setup around noon on Friday

Both devices stayed plugged in all weekend, my iPad Pro was plugged in all day during work hours.

I have 86,501 photos in iCloud Photos. Photos & Videos takes up 525 gigabytes of data on iCloud.

It's Monday at 4:30PM and both devices are still struggling to scan the library:

I intentionally left both devices plugged in and locked for 3 straight days and they're still not done. This would be a full week for the iPad working 16 hours a day and it still hasn't finished scanning.

I'll also add that on day one of scanning, I had to switch to the wall-plug for both devices because they would actually lose battery life despite being plugged in to my USB 3.0 powered outlet. Also, both devices are noticeably hot every time I pick them up to check the status w/o a case.

My devices are plugged in at my desk, in the car and at night while I'm sleeping. I really thought they'd be done by now. I don't use them during the day since I have a computer.

Is this normal?

Apple approach to AI is to do all the heavy duty processing on-device as opposed to doing it in the cloud (like Google does, for example) in the name of privacy. You and only you own the photos and Apple can't even open them in the cloud if you have iCloud Photo Library, to make that processing on much powerful servers.

All the machine learning algorithms to detect faces and objects and what not take huge amounts of processing and you seem to have a pretty big amount of pictures so depending on the power of your devices it can take a long time.

But it is a one time only thing. After your full library is scanned, new pictures will be processed almost on the fly. It is a price I am happy to pay to keep my privacy.

[doublepost=1474409918][/doublepost]I only add photos to iCloud / photos for Mac that I like. Lightroom gets 1,000 photos per session and roughly 50 go to iCloud. I've been using iPhoto since version 1. So I have digital images going back to 1998.

It's very frustrating since it's not giving good indications that it is indexing the library. As I understand it, it has to be charging and locked, Apple's first party charging case will not count. It seems to do this at different speeds, maybe it's also crawling through videos as well.

I am having similar trouble. I installed the GM beta nearly two weeks ago (or is it longer? I don't remember for sure.) Anyway I have about 20,000 pictures in my iCloud Photo Library. It very quickly scanned about 17,000 of the pictures, and then seemed to stall out. It's been stuck in the 17-18k range scanned for over a week. I'm not sure why it is like that, I've had it plugged in day and night almost the entire 2+ weeks. I wish there was a way to see if it's stalled out somewhere or something.

OP, I feel your pain. I only have 4K on iCloud and my phone decided it wanted to 'download' all of them back there for some reason when I updated to 10.0.1. Took it all day and night to finish, moving very slowly on what I suspect were the 4K videos. It is also optimized for storage so it should not have been grabbing every single one. Hang in there.

How old are you? If you're under the age of 20, I'll understand but I've had a digital camera since I was 10 years old. iPhoto user since version 1.0. I have photos back to Freshmen year of high school, my first job waiting tables, my friends in high school, homecoming football games, my first time flying out to SF, Boston, various countries, I travel a lot and my DSLR is always with me

I find it really offensive you say I have a mental disorder because I take a lot of photos. I don't even know how to defend myself.

4,500 photos a year since I first got a digital camera. That's nothing. For someone who goes on road trips every weekend, 4 countries a year at least. I snapped 115 photos this weekend in boston that I'll keep. I just don't really know what to say. The fact that you got two people to like your post is pretty infuriating. our computers are built to hold our entire digital life. Why would apple even offer a 2 terabyte iCloud tier? word documents?
