So my wife has a ton of photos on her iCloud and I want to put them to an external hard drive. When I hit the download cloud button, the photo automatically downloads to my downloads on my iMac and does not give me the option to download them to the external hard drive I have plugged in. What am I missing? seems like something very easy to do but I must be doing something wrong. There are way to many photos to do this one by one.

I assume, you’re using Safari to download the photos via iCloud.com ? If so, while in Safari, go to Safari (menu) -> Preferences -> General -> File download location. Click on Downloads and select Other, choose your external drive (or folder on the external drive). When you finished downloading photos, you can change this preference back to the Downloads folder, of course.

For other Web browsers, it’s similar. For example, in Google Chrome: Chrome (menu) -> Preferences -> Downloads.
