I have an iPhone and Mac. iPhone has iCloud enable for photos Mac does not, I try to save the photos on physical drive on Mac. I usually keep original photos on my iPhone.

However, whilst on holiday for some time I enabled upload to cloud and optimised storage.

When I try to import the photos from iPhone to Mac it won't let me see those stored in the cloud. How can I get the unmodified pictures back on my iPhone to allow me to import on my Mac?

Cheers

Step 1, enable iCloud Photos the Mac.

There is no step 2.
I don't want to pay more than the 200GB iCloud and my library is greater than that, which was the reason for the post and why I back everything manually to the Mac.

If I did enable the 2TB cloud on my Mac will that enable all pictures to just show automatically on my Mac in the original resolution they were taken if I enable that option in the cloud setting? Or do I need to download them all individually?

Does anybody else suffer slow downloads on the iPhone when looking at photos stored on the cloud?

Many thanks

...my library is greater than that.
You said iCloud photos are turned on for your phone. I assumed, therefore, that your entire library was already in iCloud. If they are, then by turning on iCloud Photos on the Mac, they will automatically become available on the Mac. Whether the Mac keeps full resolution photos or just thumbnails depends on your specific settings for full resolution originals.

I have never used iCloud for Mac, so my full collection isn't uploaded. I have a physical copy of my whole library on my Mac as a back up but this is a larger library than on my iPhone.

Is there a way to download my photos from the iCloud to my iPhone (or as many as it will let me) automatically?

Ok. I think I know what you want. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Photos. Turn on “Download and Keep Originals”. After syncing, which could take awhile, your full resolution photos will be on the phone. Then you can sync them to your Mac.

That’s exactly it. I’ve done that but they only download to my iPhone if I view them. Could this be bacause the cloud library is bigger than the phone storage, so doesn’t know which to sync?

i don’t know. That could be the reason (they don’t all fit). It might also just take more time.
