iPhone iCloud photos.

So I’ve always use iTunes to backup and restore my phone and arrange my pics on the PC.

One of my biggest gripes with the iPhone is that there’s still no way to organise your photos on the phone itself. You HAVE to use a PC/MAC.

So having always used iTunes I thought I’d give iCloud photo’s a go. When I turned it on it removed over 2k photos I’d synced via iTunes. I then had to wait whilst the exact same pictures it had just deleted uploaded to iCloud. Which is idiotic quite frankly. Why not just sync them.

Once that was done despite them being in albums and arranged on the pc they were all just thrown in an ‘all photos’ album on the phone.

So I spent hours sorting them yet again in to the albums they were in originally.

Only to then find I can’t delete them from ‘all photos’ without it deleting them entirely from my phone. Plus it puts all the pics you take with your camera in this ‘all photos’ folder.

So what I ended up with was a folder with 2k Unsorted pics in and duplicates of those pictures in albums. And three hours of time wasted.

Surely that can’t be right? Please someone tell me I’m an idiot and have done it completely wrong?

All I want is to be able to snap a pic then move that pic in to the correct album should I wish to keep it.

Is iCloud photos basically just shoving them all in one album and leaving it like that?

For me, that works perfectly and I didn't have to do anything special for that. I'm sorry as that may not be helpful, but it literally was that simple...Drag photos into one or more albums, then I see the same on iCloud and my phone and my ipad...

No, that’s not possible with iCloud Photo Library.

No you can't - but if you don't like all photos then simply don't look at it I rarely ever do, but sometimes it can be handy if you are looking for that one photo and want to search for it...

I’m not seeing the issue. All Photos is what it says it is. If you never want to view them like that then don’t. There aren’t duplicate photos. You can add photos to multiple albums and they’re not duplicated.

Really? On my phone, it sticks to the previous screen. I just tried it and launched photos and I got straight to moment which is the same view as the camera roll was...Or now I left it on Albums and when I launch it again it goes straight back to Albums...There is no need to ever look at all photos...But hey the choice is yours...

Your idea that a photo should exist in an album rather than ‘tagged’ with an album leads to duplication. What if you have an album ‘best of 2017’ and ‘best of Christmas 2017’ - you might have a photo you’d like in both. You want the photo in each album, which is duplication. Instead, the photo exists once and is tagged with those two albums. The photo exists in a flat list of all photos.

We don’t need to agree, just trying to help you think about it in a different way

I think because I don’t have albums like that. I’ve organised my photos in a certain way since I first got a PC age 16 twenty years ago.

I already have albums and all photos I take if I want to keep them already have a pre defined album they will fit in.

Yes they will still be in a All Photos since all Photos does a query of All your photos

Remember you always only have one physical copy, the rest is simply meta data with pointers to that one copy. It’s a good thing

But that’s the beauty of this app. After you take a few pictures you go into the app and it will only show you the pictures that aren’t in folders. So assuming your other existing pictures are already sorted into folders, then you’ll only see the pictures you just took. No scrolling through 3000 pictures to find the new ones. The new ones will be right there waiting for you to sort them into folders too.

I’m getting really curious as to what your workflow actually is...My photos on iCloud are going back to mid-nineties at the moment, the photos I’ve just took are right there. No need to scroll through lots of pictures. I can’t help but think something that may be totally obvious to me but not to you is being missed here...

That’s not how it works on my iPhone or iPad. When I go to Photos -> Albums -> All Photos, I’m shown the newest photos I’ve taken or synced via iCloud Photo Library. The bottom of the list. Always.

When I switched from an Android phone to iPhone, it was hard for me to deal with all pictures in one album. I kinda got used to it now. Now it still annoys me that all pictures and screen shots get placed in that all pictures album. It be nice if you can move pictures from the all picture album into other albums and not keeping them in all photos album.

In android, is there no way to view all photos in a flat list?

Google at least with its organization, you don't move or copy, it just creates a link pointing at the "real" photo. And you can have as many alias links as you want, but you are not copying or moving anything. I think MS OneDrive is the same. But at least with those it will sync.

It's called "all photos" for a reason... If it was possible to make it not show every photo then it wouldn't be named that.

I understand that it’s named appropriately for its function, but I would prefer not to have an folder that contains all of my photos. It would be nice to have the ability to turn it off or hide it.
