iCloud Photos

Hi

I have iCloud but really am confused by the photo side.

If I take a photo on my phone, once auto uploaded to the cloud does it get deleted from my phone.

If I view a photo on my phone that is stored in the cloud does it download a copy?

How do I know which photos are stored on my iPhone and which are are in the cloud?

Any help appreciated.

It’s just like email. Everything is in the cloud. You can view and manipulate on any device and the changes are reflected everywhere. So replace “photo” with “email” and think about how that works:

If I send an email on my phone, once sent, does it get deleted from my phone? No.

If I view a email on my phone that is stored in the cloud does it download a copy? Yes, when you open it.

How do I know which emails are stored on my iPhone and which are are in the cloud? You don’t and you don’t need to. As far as you know they are all there all of the time (if you have an internet connection).

It’s not a perfect analogy but does it help? Here is another...

You have a den in your house with three doors, one to the kitchen, one to the living room, and one to the dining room. Suppose you walk in from the kitchen, drop a newspaper, and leave. Then later you enter from the living room...the newspaper is still there even though you came from a different place. This time you take the newspaper and depart. If you go back through the dining room the newspaper will not be there any more. Do you see it now? The cloud, like the den, is a repository which can viewed and manipulated from any device. No matter which you use you see the same thing, the same photos, the same emails, etc.

So if I view it does it get removed after it is downloaded and I finish looking at the photo? I'm conscious of whether this uses storage as I will be away for a few weeks with little if any data
connection. Will I be able so see my photos?

If a photo is downloaded it will probably stay until iOS needs the space for something else. The Photos app will keep thumbnails of every photo so you can browse. Space is managed automatically.

You mean that in an iphone 32gb you can have photos of 32 gb, if you have icloud storage 50gb and have select photos optimize? Every time there is no storage on iphone the ios will optimize the photos on iphone so there will be no storage problem?
