Hey everyone,

I normally back up my 6s manually to my computer. I do this because I am confused with how iCloud works. What exactly is it backing up? It says it will back up my photo library, but my library is 6.2gb. Does it compress these photos? I apologize if this could have been found by searching the forums, but it is difficult to word. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks!

With respect to photos specifically it will back up your 'camera roll' i.e. Photos taken with your iOS device. It won't back up photos which you may have synced to your device from your computer. This is assuming you have photo backup turned on in iCloud settings on your iOS device.

It doesn't compress your photos. If you have more than 5gb to backup (the free amount), it will prompt you to upgrade your storage.

If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on and "Optimize iPhone Storage" selected then it does not backup your photos in the iPhone's iCloud backup file since the photos are already backed up in the iCloud Photo Library.
If you choose "Download and Keep Originals" then iCloud will backup your photos in your iPhone's iCloud backup file as well as in the iCloud Photo Library.
Make sense? It is generally suggested to choose "Optimize iPhone Storage" since it saves space on your device as well as reducing your iCloud backup file size.
