As my wife and I are gathering addresses of family friends to send Christmas cards out, it occurred to me that there isn't currently a way to have a shared family contact list on iCloud. That seems like a an oversight. Family friends are one example, but also the family doctor, the kids' teachers, babysitters, lawyers, manufacturers household appliances for warranty and repairs., extended family members...

I understand your point. For me I’d have to go through my contacts and decide which ones my spouse should have and which ones are solely mine. If I have to do that I can just as easily send the contact information. I wouldn’t mind the feature you’re asking for but it’s nothing pressing for me. Maybe for a larger family where kids are involved it would become more useful.

1Password handles this situation easily (for passwords).I have a family vault and personal vault. All the passwords in my family vault are shared, those in my personal vault are just for me. Apple could just allow us to put stuff in Personal or Shared Contacts. All contacts could go into your personal contacts by default when the feature launches (so nothing changes for the user who doesn't care or want to bother). If you find one you want your wife to have access to, just drag it into the shared contacts. The problem with sending contact information on an individual basis is that it'll be out of sync if either your spouse or you ever change it. I get that it might not be super high priority for some, but I'm not sure what else takes precedence for those working on the Contacts app. Surely they need something to do this year.
