I now keep getting the message that my iCloud storage is full and I cannot put anything onto my Desktop.

I don't want to use iCloud, I didn't sign up for it so how can I "get out of it"??

When I went into the iCloud settings and turned it all off I lost all my Desktop things!

Can I not "delete" everything that is currently in iCloud, I don't need or want it there?

Very annoying to be controlled by Apple!

Yes, I've done that Howard and I lose all my Desktop items, as I said in OP. Can I delete them from the iCloud without them also going from my Desktop???

You don't lose them, it moves them to a folder in your Users folder. Open Finder --> Macintosh HD --> Users --> Your Name --> and you should see a folder in there with your iCloud files from Desktop/Documents.

Many thanks, I'll have a look. Presumably I can then put them back onto my desktop?

No, don't have a Macintosh HD folder in Finder??

Yep, you can copy them back to your desktop if you want.

It's your hard drive -- see attached image below (it can be named anything):

Under Locations --- I have my laptop name, my hard drive, my external drive in that order. Go to your Laptop --- then inside of there you can go to your disk (Startup Volume), then go to users folder, and in there you'll find the iCloud Drive saved folder.

You are not looking at the Desktop, your display shows the All Tags section from the Sidebar. You appear to have iCloud still turned on. If it was off you would not see that section in the Sidebar.

When iCloud is properly off, go to Finder>Preferences>Tags and make sure the Desktop is ticked to show it in the Finder.

I have now turned OFF iCloud, lost everything on my Desktop and this is what I get in Finder for iCloud...........

Now where can I find all my missing stuff please :(

Try this:
Open safari and sign in to iCloud.com with your apple id
From the launchpad select iCloud drive
You should see a folder called desktop
Select that and see if your files are there
If so, download to your local drive

OK. I have turned off iCloud, found the archive folders and put everything back on my Desktop.
On checking the iCloud, even though now OFF, it still registers that it as being Full - along the bottom

Did you login to iCloud and delete everything from the iCloud Drive? Also, are you not backing up your phone to iCloud?

This means that your icloud storage is full. You only get 5gb for free and you are using 4.95gb of that space. You have turned off iCloud drive, so now all of your documents etc. should be saving locally to your hard drive and not using iCloud drive.

If the message about iCloud being full bothers you, simply login to iCloud via Safari as I instructed above, copy all of the files from iCloud to your local drive, and then delete all the files from iCloud via the web browser.
