Any idea why this periodically appears? For the record I have 50gb storage, with around 38Gb available.

Thanks.

You should go and check how much actual storage there is in iCloud from your phone and also see what the phone thinks the size of the next backup is going to be--should be doable by checking Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage

Try deleting your current iCloud backup for your device and creating a new one. Like anything iOS related, it gets bloated. So it is probably saying your backup is larger than your 12GB free space, so it cannot write a new one.

Settings -> iCloud -> Backup -> Turn Off.
iCloud -> Storage -> Manage Storage -> Device Backup -> Delete Backup.
iCloud -> Backup -> Turn On -> Backup Now.

icloud backup is working pretty wierd on my air2 and 6s+ after ios9.3. im getting the same error message as you. i deleted old backups and made new ones - and oh boy it took time and many "interrupted" messages.

now im trying to backup air2 and it seems to be impossible. space needed for the next backup is showing arbitrary numbers between 2-7gb - now it is sjowing the next one being 1.9gb.

edit. cannot backup ipad anymore... all the time saying that the backuping aborted.
