My master Contacts list is maintained in Outlook 2010 running on Windows 7.

I have been using MobileMe to sync my contacts to MobileMe and then from MobileMe to my Mac running Lion (and Snow Leopard prior to Lion) with no issues.

I downloaded the PC iCloud Control Panel and installed it including signing off of my MobileMe account via the MobileMe Control Panel.

I converted my MobileMe account to iCloud.

I signed on to the PC iCloud Control Panel and selected just Contacts and hit Apply.

Result:

- Two Outlook Folder Groups: My Contacts and iCloud - OK
- Contacts in my My Contacts->Contacts folder all deleted - I would have liked a warning about this.
- Contacts in iCloud->Contacts trashed: many contacts duplicated with the exact same info; some duplicated with different info; in general a mess which is unusable!
- Calendar missing because I didn't convert it and because I signed out of MobileMe. When I try to access the Outlook (from MobileMe) Calendar I receive: "The set of folders can not be opened. The information store could not be opened".

How in world could this have been tested?

After the MobileMe fiasco a few years ago, you would have thought that this could not be possible. iCloud is an embarassment! For God's sake hire testers who know what they are doing before you release your software.

I want my MobileMe back!

I uninstalled iCloud and tried signing on with MobileMe with no sucess.

I had the same problems. I am trying to restore from an earlier outlook.pst file, but I am having trouble doing it. Stay tuned.

before creating all that mess in outlook, iCould moved your calendar and contacts to Deleted Items folder in your main Personal Folder. So, restoring is easy: just copy & paste. Just do not forget to look at them through Folder List view. Also, For calendar switch to a different view: View > Current View > all appointments. Good luck

The Calendar and Contacts native Outlook folders should not be empty. Mine are mirror images of the ICloud version. It's a bit irritating because whenever I do a search in Outlook now, I get two hits instead of one - one from the native folder and one from the ICloud folder. No biggie.

A person on the Apple Chat line walked me through it, and we restored it successfully, although it took a couple of rounds of trial and error before we were finally able to staibilize the patient. I was surprise at how quickly they answered the chat on a day like this. Here is the link to the chat line:
