iCloud vs. Gmail for Apple ID?

Hey all,
I've been trying to get a new Apple ID set up. I'm between using Gmail as the email address associated with the Apple ID / iCloud, but I'm just wondering what I will lose / not be able to access if I don't use iCloud email.

I use Gmail as my main email, personal and for school.

I don't think you will lose anything. I use another email service besides icloud.com as my apple id sign in address. I was still able to setup an icloud email address for the account. If you setup your apple id with your gmail account I believe the difference is that notifications and alerts will go to your gmail address instead of your icloud email.
