icloud w PC and no Outlook...what else?

My only apple device at present is an ipad2...I have a PC and I have no desire to use Outlook even though I have it...so without a Mac and without Outlook is icloud basically for me to use as a wireless backup for my ipad? No other way to sync contacts, mail, calendars etc with something like google/gmail, or no reason to I guess since google mail and calendars already sync, so to speak?

No, iCloud backs up your contacts, emails, pictures, device and settings and app data. Just leave Outlook out of the equation.

For example, let's say you dropped your iPad and it wasn't usable. When you got a replacement, all you'd need to do is restore from iCloud and your device would be just like the day your dropped it. Like I just said in another thread, if you have an iDevice there really isn't any reason not to use it. It's free and awesome.

I'm in the same position as the OP. only an iPad, a PC and no Outlook. When I setup my iPad I put my gmail acct in via the Apple interface ( did not set up as Exchange). I don't have the option to sync contacts with Gmail. But I use my Live account. So I'm syncing there.

OP, do you have the option to sync via gmail? If yes, how did you set up your account?

OP, sync ot icloud. login to icloud.com -> contacts -> export as vcard, do whatever you want with them.

You... For gmail mail/contact/cal sync. Make new mail account, do NOT select GMAIL, select Microsoft Exchange. Setup using full gmail email address as username, and use servername: m.google.com as address.
