I looked through the different forums and couldn't see any for this specifically so apologies if it in the wrong place.
So I am not using iCloud to the best of its ability. I recently upgraded to 50gb as 5gb wasn't enough for my phone. So I have a fair amount of free space and wouldn't be against upgrading again if needed.
Im pretty invested in the apple ecosystem having a phone, watch, MacBook pro set up as a desktop and now 2 iPads.
I use photos to store and organise my photos but haven't got them synced to any other devise but my Mac. I would like to have them synced to my iPad and possibly phone depending on space. How do I do this?
Is it possible to set it up so my photo stream doesn't sync to my iPad? I have a DSLR which I use for photography and my phone pictures are normally just rubbish and screenshots.
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how the hell i get the most out of this feature. Thanks in advance.

Activate iCloud Photo Library in the iCloud settings on either. You can decide wether to optimize space, to keep downloads to a minimum.

Photo Stream and iCloud Library are two different things.

Just don't activate iCloud Photo Library on the iPad, but only Photo Stream. Then it will send images to the iCloud library, but not download it.

Ok I think I might have confused things. Is there a way to get all the albums from photos on my mac to my iPad but without my camera roll coming over as well.

This might be an unnecessary workaround (there might be a simpler way), but you can set up an Shared Album with yourself, AKA iCloud Photo Sharing.
