Ive downloaded a few apps fromthe store and its strange, some of my apps have downloaded and show the round edged icons but others show us being straight edged, even when they have rounded corners on the store...

Same here... not sure why the discrepancy - Apple is usually pretty keen to its aesthetics.

Edit: It seems as though when you click on each individual icon, iTunes recognizes them as 'round-edged' application icons; however, developers must have submitted icons without editing individual icons for their respective applications.

Normally the system automatically adds the rounded edges and the shine but the developer can choose to disable that for their app. I thought they would be required to add them themselves, but apparently that's not the case.

We're not supposed to add rounded edges ourselves, actually - that's done by the iPhone always. Square images.

As for your square image thingys...yeah, those are sized-down versions of the 512x512 icons we all submit for use with our apps. It looks like anyone that elected to do prerendering on their icon (so that things like the reflection effect aren't applied) didn't get rounded corners in iTunes. Bug, I'd guess. Everywhere else the rounded edges are applied normally.

Just installed 2.0 on my iPhone and the applications with the squared edges (like remote) all have rounded edges on the phone.

Actually, you can set a flag in your app that tells the system not to add the shine and rounded corners

Rounded corners are defaulted. Shine is an option.

iTunes appears to display them as full squares in the Applications Tab on purpose because they are like "cover art" I guess. It does look bad though.

Indeed it does. One would hope that Apple's own app would set the standard ... and yet Apple's own app (iTunes) sets a different standard from Apple's own app (Remote) :apple:.
