I recently upgraded to Yosemite and did a clean install. While I usually used Finder in list or cover flow view, the default is now icon view and I kind of like it.

But!

This view seems to remember what size the Finder window was open in last time, and arrange the icons accordingly. This means if the Finder window is smaller, I'll have icons hanging off the side, and if it's bigger, there will be a bunch of white space on the side.

Is there any way to have the icons fill up the Finder window no matter what size it is? i.e., to have them automatically rearrange themselves when the window size changes?

View > View Options (cmd + J) > Sort By: [choose something]. You can hit the "Use as Defaults" button at the bottom to apply it to all folders. Not entirely sure if I understood you correctly though.

It was a hard question to phrase, but this seems to do the trick. Thanks!
