Hey everyone, just wanted to post up my personal collection of custom designed icons for use with external hard drives.

Here's the one I custom made for the Iomega Silver portable HD.
You can download it in ICNS format here.

If you need me to make an icon for one of your external HDs please just let me know. I might not have it ready right away because I have a job but I'll do my best to do it fast and well. :)

They look really nice OP, great work! As someone else said, the WD one might look even cooler if you add the USB cable in it, with the cable fading away...although that would ruin the clean rectangular shape of the icon, so maybe not. Either way, great job!

There's another solution too if you don't want to use litecom: open up the icon file in Preview, when it opens, press Command + C on your keyboard. Quit preview. Select the disk who's icon you want to change and Command + I, click the original icon (top left) in the window that opens, a blue glow effect should then appear. Press Command+V on your keyboard. Your icon is changed.

hehe, that would be confusing for folks like me who have multiples of the same drive.

Personally, the external drive gets the icon set to its purpose.

for example:

my 3 primary networked drives, and one direct connect external

WD MyBook Mac 1TB: hermes: backup: backup umbrella icon
WD MyBook Mac 1TB: athena: applications storage: default applications folder icon
WD MyBook Essential 2TB: hyperion:itunes media: iTunes icon
WD MyPassport Studio 500GB: chronos: time machine: time machine icon

I'm pretty consistent with that for pen drives as well.

makes it easy to identify what's what on the desktop.

For ppl who don't get how to change the icon, all you have to do is right click on the drive or folder you want to change, click get info then drag the .icns file onto the pic of the drive in the get info. It should change.

Slightly off topic, but it's nice to know I'm not weird when it comes to naming machines/HDD's.

I've named all my computers after Greek/Roman/Norse gods bar two, my first one was Arkleseizure, the second was Deep Thought.

Machines have been called:

Heimdall - P4 3Ghz (dad's)
Mjollnir - My old PC - I upgraded a number of parts to a new PC but kept the same name
Hyperion - currently iMac (27" i7)
Freyr - Old hackintosh laptop
Thor - Interim computer of some description quite a few years ago.
Helius - currently a 15" MBP (late 08 UB)

I've tried dragging the icns file several times and all it does is copy it onto the hard drive itself. Any suggestions?

Can't install the WD passport icon. Once i remove the ".txt" from the downloaded icns file, it appears as the proper icon. but the icon in the upper left hand corner of the info window of your icon is a generic icns doc icon. i've replaced zillions of icons before, and would like to use this one, but it's eluding me. what am i doing wrong?
