the states for now
I downloaded and installed both transmission and VLC into my apps folder but these white icons keep popping up on my desktop. VLC will not let me eject it and if i eject transmission it shows back up as soon as I open transmission again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you opening them from the Dock? Make sure that the icon in the Dock is linked to the app in the Applications folder and not the app in the Disk Image. Press COMMAND on the icon in the Dock and it should take you to its location. :)

Thanks and how do you change where dock icons are linked?

OK, this is what you need to do.

Just put the application from the drive into the Applications folder. Then, drag that to the dock.

Just remove the one you have in the dock right now. :)

how do i change where programs are installed? it must still be desktop because i tried what you said and it still creates an icon on the desktop.

It downloads into apps but after i click continue for it to add the downloaded file it moves it to the desktop.

EDIT: I fixed it. I have to open that icon, copy all the files inside, create a new folder, paste the files inside, eject the original white icon, then open my new folder and drag vlc to dock. I would think there is an easier way but not even locking the desktop would prevent vlc from being added.

VLC should be in your Applications folder (double check it) as with the white VLC on your desktop you could right click (if you have a two button mouse) and eject it. That would remove it from your desktop. I thought that when you download a program it will ask you where you want it to go, such as the desktop, Apps. folder and so on.

When i would eject it, it would disappear only to reappear as soon as I ran the program again.
