Gaming legend. I hope his work in Oculus Rift pays off. I also hope the Tech 5 engine is fixed for Doom 4.

"Id Software has left John Carmack!"

You sure it's not the other way around?

^ This.

What other programmers on staff does id have that could do what Carmack's done? I love him for his brilliance and his attitude toward Apple. He' s one of the few people who made sure OSX support was in id's games since OSX was around.

Doom 3 was first demoed at Macworld, for example.

Just when you thought John Carmack would ruin Doom 4 with texture pop in, he leaves! :D

I have to say :D face or not that is completely unwarranted. Carmack is the one of the reasons you can play 3D games with such amazing effects etc. He is a living legend in the game industry and some of the most revolutionary steps in game engine design came out of his mind.

Sure the games he made didn't have the best scripts / gameplay but the technology behind them was always game changing. It's hard to be part of a game changer once in your career but to do it multiple times is really impressive.

"Id Software has left John Carmack"

Does this mean that he was fired ?

Read the link in the post :)

Answer is no he left for a different (more interesting) job.

Hm...english is not my native language, but wouldn't a title like "John Carmack has left Id Software" be more appropriate ?

I mean, only Master Yoda speaks like that (and me sometimes, but I'm not 900 years old) :D

P.S. Is Tomb Raider out yet ? Now ? What about now ? We're waiting.

Yes

Agreeing of the situation I am! ;)

*checks* no

*checks again* still no

I would keep checking but that would stop me from working through the final issues :)

It's the European grammatical style, methinks.

Kinda like 5-7-2013 means the fifth day of the seventh month of 2013.

Those backward Euros! ;) :D

Rest Of World Date Format

DD MM YY

Smallest measurement of time to the largest in order, easy to sort by simple 6 digit date format, it is also follows mathematical order.

US Date Format

MM DD YY

Medium measure of time followed by the smallest followed by the largest. It has no order, is harder to sort using dates in file formats and doesn't follow standard mathematical sort order.

====

I would argue that the US therefore has a very broken formatting rule on dates not Europe. :p

As for the grammar it was wrong and I think a bit of a joke by the OP.

We may have a broken date format and an even more broken system of measurement (excluding weather temperature) but at least we don't throw in extraneous letters in our spelling! :p

It was clearly a joke, I'm surprised people didn't get it. I laughed.

I don't know what you mean, I mean you can either spell colour correctly or you can't ;)

While I am on my crusade why doesn't the OS have "English" for "English" and "US English" for the US? I mean "English English" or "UK English" is a bit silly?

It's like "France French" or "Spain Spanish" the clue is in the name of the language! :D

IDs downward spiral began after q3a.
i think q3a, CS aside, changed online multiplayer like no other game did.
even today in its QL form its still very popular.

i find it very regretable that ID didnt push the MP part in future games, or even focused on it like q3a did.
even though it was mostly mods that has been played over the years.
and after all those years, when cpma and osp showed how MP focused games should be(especially in the pro competition area), ID released q4 and the MP part was extremely crippled and useless.
for me at least that was the point when it was clear ID has lost its path.

i would be very surprised if doom4 would be something mind blowing.
too many ID veterans left lately. release doom4 and after that, close ID, let it die with honor.

As a fan of all of IDs games, I couldn't disagree more. And I'm also glad they moved on from focusing on multiplayer, since I'm a singleplayer sort of guy.

I don't get the fuss about it....yes he was a brilliant developer, back in the days when 1 person would make a game like Civilization, Populous, Elite and so on.

Then things change, 1 person won't make the difference anymore, since the team are made by hundreds of people, the engine are purchased and sub licensed by other companies (not his case, since he was the mind behind the various quake engines); and overall the focus is to make the next AAA title to release in time for the holidays.

He is an antics of a past era; and it is right that he take off and go experimenting new things...nobody nowadays uses assembly anymore, so his super skills are quite useful in certain fields only nowadays, and that's why at the Oculus he will probably make something amazing.

But game wise, I don't see the point in even mentioning that he left ID (or they let him go; whatever it is), after all he was already done since long time ago...other than Doom franchise (and Rage), is not like he did many other things. They beat that Doom horse until it was not dead but already dried up :)

Good luck JK :)

Sorry to see him go. It feels like the end of an era and I guess in a way it is.

That said, long live id software! I like their games.

Exactly why does Carmack have this legendary status as a developer? I know he gives good lectures and he's always advocating various technologies, but Id is an incredibly unproductive software house.

Doom - revolutionary
Quake - incredible
Quake 3 - the future!

But that run of form ended in 1999. Since then, what have they done? Other than a few re-releases, it's just Doom 3 in 2004, which was massively disappointing, and the weak, bug-riddled Rage in 2011.

Hardly anyone even uses their engines these days, do they? I guess they've still got Id tech buried somewhere in Call of Duty. Doesn't seem like much, considering the guy's stature in the games biz.

Thing is, it's only Id Software in name only now. Everyone who made Id Id back in the day is now gone.

Oh well. We've still got Doom 4 to look forward to, which has the chances of either turning out either great, or merely alright. Beyond that, Carmack will hopefully put his well honed nerd magic on full display and finally give us the True VR Experience we've all been secretly waiting for since the mid-90's

I had my true VR experience more than 30 years ago! :D
