Hey people,

I was wondering if I could put an IDE hard drive in my mac pro. I dont want to spend the money on an extra sata2 HD. if its possible, what kind of transfer rates could i expect? how much slower is this than an sata2 drive?

You can install an IDE drive in the spare dvd bay you will get normal IDE drive speeds.

But why? SATA2 drives are dirt cheap right now... up to 320gigs for 100 bucks, 120 for like 45-50.

If you can afford a Mac Pro surely you will want to not bog it down with old hardware?

LOL. Spending money on what's important in life is always a must.

I did the same at your age!

I'd get a SATA hard drive even if it means saving for a little longer. It doesn't need to be a specifically SATA2 one (although I think they all are). SATA is a much nicer solution imo and is a hell of a lot nicer and easier to install in a Mac Pro. :)

I know that feeling, though I did it on a MBP. Frankly i'm kinda upset, seeing as I could have had a Mac Pro had I waited another 4-ish months

you'll manage it though.

edit: 50 bucks you say? I know it may be tough to scrounge up the extra $4.99 or so.... but how about
