I was thinking, why doesn't apple offer a screen upgrade on the 17" iMac to the MBP 17" screen which is a higher pixel density (1680x1050)? Maybe then they can buy some more high-res screens that can go into the 20" and 24" iMacs too.

Hmm good point.... I never really thought of that. If anything, they should use that idea for the next upgrade.... or for the education market (Which is where the 17" iMac will probably end up)

They won't do that because they like to keep the DPI relatively constant across their desktop line. Laptops are different because they're meant to be compact and are often used nearer to the eyes. Besides which, if they made the 17" 1680x1050 then they'd have to make the 20" 1920x1200. What could they make the 24"? There aren't any 24" panels over 1920x1200, at least as far as I can tell in the consumer area. If they did somehow get a 2560x1600 24" panel then it would be stepping on the toes of the 30" ACD.

Yeah, while I do not expect Apple to use those specs I do think it is a good idea. But then again it is really only a good idea if you offer screen upgrades across the linup, which I can't see happening because of reason given by Spanky.

I think it could work. It would be an upgrade like he said. If you want the education or the base model, use the 1440x900s, and if you want 1680x1050, you pay a couple hundred more. I could totally see that working.
