My neck often hurts after awhile from looking down at the low position of a laptop screen (especially the smaller the laptop). What do you think of a screen that could slide up to a higher position (just a few inches)? Would you want that, assuming it doesn’t come with too much trade off? Do you think there could be a feasible design solution for this? Has it been attempted before on another laptop?

i don't see apple doing this in the future to be honest.
They get off on thinner lighter and slimmer, even so that the screens break when you sneeze at them.

I had the same issue and then i bought a dirt cheap stand that angles the macbook how i want.
That resulted in weird hand position, so i bought an external keyboard.

Hahah yeah might not be likely for Apple. I dunno, just spitballing an idea, and seeing if others would find it useful.

Yeah ergonomics is not a problem at my desks at home and work because of externals monitors, keyboards, trackpads/mice, etc. Problem is I do a lot of work away from my desks too and don’t want to carry big peripherals like stands and external keyboards around.
Also that setup wouldn’t work on a lap and closed quarters.

Not what you're looking for of course - but I sometimes bring a folding laptop stand with me on travels, so I can get the screen up. These stands do often extend more than a few inches, which we all know is not satisfactory. :D

Sometimes at the hotel there's some strange tellings of old in the form of a book called "New Testament", now I don't read fairy tales, but it can be used to prop up a laptop a fair bit. But the books in question are getting rarer these days, perhaps out conquered by said folding laptop stand? :)

Yeah stands (even folding) and thick books aren’t always suitable for the reasons stated above (ergonomics, etc.).

Interesting idea, and I do feel your pain from time to time when I’m at a client site and aren’t able to connect to an external display. What would worry me is the reliability of introducing something like this. I feel like the mechanics would be a big point of failure after extended use. Not to mention the increased thickness that might be required to support said mechanics.

Rollable display tech would allow for this. Current LCD - no chance.
