IDEA: So much untapped potential with Messages.app!

Think about it. Apple WANTS you in their ecosystem. iPhones, iPod, iPad, OSX, iTunes & iCloud. But... there are still some people who have not embraced the entire Apple lifestyle. Some people who have iPhones, but no Mac. Some Mac owners who have Android phones.

How about using Messages to encourage more people to adopt Apple devices.

My idea...

I dock my iPhone to my iMac. Then... Messages on OSX takes over for my phone! So... in the Messages app, I would be able to send, receive & read SMS & MMS messages sent to/from my iPhone's phone number. The OSX Messages app would no longer be limited to iMessage. This would be a HUGE feature.

What do you think?

Hell... while we're at it... how about updating the FaceTime app to be a full fledged calling app... using your iPhone's cell service.

Yeah, I think I remember talking about this idea a couple of years ago here on MR. I think you might be a bit over excited about it, but it is something I agree should be done. haha.

The part I disagree is "docking to your Mac". People don't do that anymore. But if there could be like a 5 foot geofence around your Mac and whenever your iPhone is in that geofense it is connected to your Mac in many ways. Text messaging would probably just be the tip of the iceburg. You've already had the idea of phone calls and I'm sure there is more possibilities. Maybe things like file transfer.. Air play... etc.

It would be cool to start a call on your Mac, grab your phone to leave, and your convo automatically switches to your iPhone once you leave the geofence.

I really love Apple products and I have had 3 Macbooks, 2 iMac, an Apple TV and 1 iPad these last 5 years, but, you can already do that flawlessly on every operating system with an Android smartphone with AirDroid ;-)

All you need is an internet access and browser on both machines and AirDroid app on the phone ;-)

Remember the NFC mac to iOS device link patents from a few years ago? That would work great.

how about a much simpler idea. Allow your mbp to act as a bluetooth headset using the mic and speakers. Much better quality than the integrated mic and speakers of an iphone.

Nice idea but wait until June and your wish comes true. Mountain Lion has both Messages and FaceTime integration and it doesn't matter where your device is.

Uhhh really? It has nothing to do with "android utilizing apple's servers"... He's simply suggesting that when your iPhone is connected to your Mac you could use your Mac to send text messages to all cell phones. It would stil be your iPhone sending texts just as always but you could use your computer to do the typing
