idea to unglossy an imac

Ok..so i was looking at an unboxing photo and the guy said that the reason it was glossy was b\c there was a sheet of glass over the lcd. Then, he preceeded to take off this glass sheet in order to get to the internal components. So...can't one just take off the glass sheet and then have a working, matte, display? The computer won't look as good, but it'll be matte.

edit: looking at the photo again..assuming this worked...a third party could make a black plastic frame that fits the spot to make it look as it did..i'm sure someone could come up with that fairly easily.

nah it wouldn't..the only way they can tell is if you unscrew stuff...which your not doing. All your doing is lifting off a piece of glass. You can put it right back and it doesn't look like anyone can tell the difference from these photos.

There is nothing to hold you from getting a costum pice of glass made /w a matted screen area - and possibly white borders? That would match the keyboard and mouse you know

or just a piece of plastic that fills the border. Assuming this works..a company (anyone listening? lol) could sell this in a range of colors for a cheap price.

you're just taking off the glass..so the bottom portion would remain.

Sounds like a pretty easy thing. I am sure that if this glossy thing is as much of a problem that some are making it out to be then there will be third party options. Could it be as simple as applying a plastic film or spray?

spray wont work, but the plastic film that is matted most likely work just fine

if you want matte..i don't see why you can't just forgo the glass piece altogether..the LCD is still underneath and it looks matte. They coulda done a spray or modified the actual LCD like on a macbook, but they didn't. This leads me to believe that it might have been a design choice by apple to let people remove this piece if they wanted matte.

So... you're saying that placing a clear piece of optical quality glass over the display turns it glossy? I don't think so. I think the underlying display is not matte, and the disassembly pics never really show. I think all you'd be doing is making the display more vulnerable and the computer uglier. I'm sure there will be a viable 3rd party solution very soon.

Frustrations?? I thought we were having fun? All this talk about case modding an iMac has a naughty PC kind of undertone.

How do you take the glass off? Is it stuck on with some sort of adhesive which will dry up without the glass there? Do I need a special tool to take off the glass?

Re: the black apple icon - maybe with a solvent you can remove the paint and have it be the brushed aluminum? Would that void the warranty?

It's anodised not painted. I'm pretty sure solvents won't do anything.

All you need is a strong suction cup. The glass is held in place with magnets.

I read that there are metal strips adhered to the back of the glass (on the edges, of course).

I also read that these magnets are, indeed, strong enough to hold the remote.
