Ideal Size For Album Art?

After upgrading to an iPhone4, I've taken the opportunity to do a thorough cleaning of my iTunes library. I'm meticulously fixing the info and art for every track, and every album.

Since I plan on hopping into an iPad sometime in the next 6 months or so, I might as well make sure my library is ready to migrate over to my iPad. So, what would you say is the ideal resolution for cover art when viewing coverflow on an iPad? I've been trying to stay as high as possible, but am averaging around 500x500.

I usually get mine from Amazon, but some of the art is horrible looking when my iPad, appleTV or iTunes displays it in full screen.

Really sad thing is I'm not sure where else to get the art for some of the albums I have. Most of them are very rare or are album imports from Europe so its hard to even find the album cover much less in a resolution that would look nice in full screen.

I get most of my album art from Album Art Exchange - great site. Google it if you want the URL - I don't remember it off the top of my head.

All of the album art is high quality, at least 600x600. I go for 800x800 where available since the iPad screen is 768 pixels wide.

Using low compression and larger artwork can add to the file sizes of the songs significantly, but it looks great on the screen. You need to decide which is more important - space or looks.

I'm not sure what you're asking about in your other post - iPad doesn't have cover flow...?

When you scroll up and down through the albums, in grid format, the covers are about 1.25 inches wide and tall, square of course.

When an album is first played the iPad blows it up to encompass the full screen, keeping it square and filling the left and ride sides with blackness. Many people hate this feature because it is useless and yes, it does distort the lower resolution images in your library. You can, and most do I imagine, minimize the expanded image and do something else.

use iTunes to get artwork in the right click menu (need an account). only thing is that it wont fetch artwork for albums not in the iTunes Store and stores the artwork in the iTunes library folder instead of the audio file.

This is kind of disappointing, but it's good to know that it will pay off to obsess over hi-res artwork . Thanks for all the info, folks.
