IDG shutters MacWorld magazine

Wow. With the original iPod being discontinued, and MacWorld shutting their doors, this is really turning into the end of an era.
They are shutting down the print edition. The online edition will remain. But it looks like most of the staff was laid off.
I hope they at least give us the choice of several new magazines, vs just throwing something like pc magazine at us assuming all tech magazines are the same..
Sad. I so enjoyed reading the magazine

Too bad I used to read MacWorld all the time. Unfortunately they couldn't keep up with the times and make themselves relevant online. Being a high tech magazine they should have pushed hard for online back in the 90's. I stopped reading because everything in the magazine was old news. This became more pronounced when they lost favor with Apple.
I think the last time I picked up a MacWorld was around 2000.
I remember drooling over the promise of Copeland and Rhapsody featured in their pages. Then having my hopes dashed with Steve Jobs cancelling everything and the new OS X project pushing back the horizon of the multi-tasking Mac OS with protected memory many more years.
Also being angry that when Mac OS X was nearing. Apple reneged on their promise during the time of Copeland and Rhapsody that the PowerMac 7500/8500/9500 and beyond would support the next generation of operating system. OS X was that next generation and it required a G3.
All the computer shops listed in the pages were a great way to get upgrades for your Mac.
I wonder what happened to Apple A+ Insider.

Kills me. I had years of MW saved up from the early days. Every month, perfectly lined up on a shelf. Including the IIFX double issue. Hundreds of what would now be vintage articles and thousands of what would now be vintage ads. But instead of putting the in the attic, I put them in the trash!
Quite sad that this didn't make the news section.

When MacWorld redid its layout from looking like a magazine with informative well written articles to making it look like web pages with fewer words and lots of open space on its pages is when I lost interest in reading it.
I used to flip through it's pages once in a while in the store.
It was mostly filled with more than a few beginner tips, some software notices and/or workflow tips, one or two "advanced" tricks that I already knew, and a handful of ads. As someone said, the content took a nosedive when the format changed.
Don't get me wrong, I liked it and did learn things once sometimes but I can understand why print stuff is going away. You can find everything online now, and with print costs not factoring into subscription fees, oftentimes you can find it at a much cheaper price.

Why doesn't IDG just do away with the old remark TS go MacMinute and spin it off. Then the people let go by IDG pick it back up and cam MIT by it's old name!

What does this mean that their will be no MacWorld Conferences anymore? Looks like Steve was right to pull out of those MacWorld Conferences a fees back.

I agree MacRumors should have posted a news item.
Back in the 1990s, when it looked like Apple was dead in the water, Macworld continued to carry the flag. In many ways, sites like MacRumors owe their very existence to publications such as Macworld.
I third this. This is huge news. And a very sad day for all of us who used to read the magazine. I used to enjoy it before it went all went down the toilet a few years ago but I still red it cause I felt I wanted to still But now it's gone, sad day.
so...macworld is NOT shutting down, it's simply going 'all-digital'. got that info today, with what is now their last paper magazine.
glad they're continuing, altho will miss the paper magazine (i have several magazines i enjoy reading AS paper magazines). still, better than nothing. now headed to zinio, to sign up for this...
EDIT: and of course, nothing works. signed up at zinio, and it's SUPPOSED to be there in my subscriptions...and isn't. ugh...
