hello, i'll keep this brief, i'm a mac newbe, just got my macbook.

how the hell do i check how much hard drive space i have free and how much is installed on the machine (i.e. there should be 160gb total)? just want to know how much space all te pre-installed apps take up.

thanks for the help

when you open a finder window or double click on the hard drive, you will see the available space at the bottom of the window.

You can go to the Apple Menu at the left, top corner in the menu and then select About this Mac. Once that opens click on More Info at the bottom. Once that opens you can look at all the hardware in the computer and get detailed info. The drive info is in there. It will tell you the full size, how much is being used and how much is available.

No problem.

I think it is funny that you asked a simple question like that and got completely different answers from everyone. A diverse group of good knowledge around here....
