Anybody have any tips for speeding up the backup process? Recently I've just been canceling the process but I should do it more.

I had the same problem with mine, really slow, tried various things to fix it, in the end I did a complete reset, reloaded my apps, movies etc. again and back up time is back to normal.
There are many threads on this. Usually points to an offending app that was just loaded, bad USB hub drivers, or anti-virus scans, some folks let the long one finish and it goes back to normal.
