IDisk uploads

Why on earth does it take SOOOOOO long to upload anything to my iDisk from Tiger's Finder? I mean it is sloooow. Nad it pretty much lock everything up. I have a 3mb dl and a 256 up ... it seems it is going way slowe than that. Does anybody have the samr problem? OR solutions?

Yes iDisk is always very slow.
I have 1500/256 connection here... but iDisk is always very slow for me...
for backups, when moving a file to my iDisk...
I am getting soo sick of how slow it is... I now have started to burn things onto CD to take with me now... and virtually giving up on iDisk. Maybe the upcoming upgrades to .Mac will fix this problem!

Your iDisk is a 250 MB storage volume on the internet you can purchase by getting .Mac, an Apple online subscription service for IMAP email, iChat, backup, synchronization, web page hosting... etc.
Your "piece" of internet where you can place all that is yours is stored on your iDisk, which then can be accessed via the WebDAV protocol.

I personally love the .Mac set of services.
Others prefer alternatives....

What are the alternatives. I would love to be able to use .Mac at school, but the computers are very restricted so I would never be able to get anything in and out at school. That's pretty much the whole point for me.

- For IMAP email many use G-Mail
- For web hosting many will use their current ISP, or any other cheap web hosting company on the web.
- iChat can be done for free using a AOL subscription

But for backup, synchronization or WebDAV disk space, you'll have to do it yourself, really. I don't think you can get the .Mac based apps like these to work using other protocols...

So, you'll have to find out what parts of .Mac you really want to use, and make a choice per selection of service. Want it all? Get .Mac.

Thanks. Basically, I want files to automatically upload from my Power Mac, and be able to download them at school. Then at school, I would like to be able to upload files. I also want all this to be secure, where I am the only one who can see it. I probably will just get web hosting.

You could try to see if you can use sftp. But then you'll have to leave the Macs on. But is most straight forward, and secure way of transferring files over the internet between two Macs.
