iDVD 3: Expensive coaster maker

I have a new 1.42 pMac. Ok so That's cool, right? No. iDVD 3 will only burn coasters! I have tried a range of DVD-Rs and not a one of them will work on a stand alone DVD player. What's worse they won't even work on my computer! So i thought, well this might be the drive. So i built a project in DVD studio pro, and voila, no coasters. From straight to video DVDs to complex menus, no issues. So i head back to iDVD, and guess what, coasters again. Now does this make any sense at all? Anyone else experienced similar situations with iDVD. I checked the preferences to make sure Burn Coasters and Frisbees wasn't checked, and it wasn't so I don't really know what else to do. Oh and re-install does not work either!

I have an 15" iMac 800 Mhz with Superdrive. I have been using iLife since it came out.

I have not had any problems with coasters. I have used both Apple's DVD-Rs and Memorex DVD-Rs I bought at a Frys in Sacramento. No problems.

We have played them here on a Sony Home Theater. We have also sent copies to both sets of our parents and they have played on set top DVD players (I do not knnow the brand).

Do your DVDs work on your PowerMac? If so, check the book for your DVD player. Could be it does not support DVD-Rs. Could be the case if it is an older player. Everything we have used is less than two years old.

he mentioned that they don't work in his computer even.


i'm pretty sure i've tried my dvds in the xbox i have (only dvd player i have besides my computer), and it didn't work...

but you're right, older players might not take them, but anything recent *should*

Is this the first time you've tried to burn DVDs or did you successfully burn DVDs w/iDVD 2? If yes, are you using the same kind of media you used that worked w/iDVD 2?

It might be your media and/or the players you are attempting to use. Even under the best circumstances DVD-/+R media only has about an 80% compatibility rate. What makes it a royal pain in the butt is both the media and the play back device are variables in the equation.

FWIW I've burned pleny of DVDs w/iDVD 2 (a few w/iDVD 3) and I've only burned one coaster. But I have heard that iDVD 3 is more coaster prone than iDVD 2 but if all you are making are coasters then something is wrong.

I actually don't like iDVD. I think it's buggy, crashes on me quite a bit, doesn't support enough file formats, and is way too slow.

Having said that, i have never burned a coaster and all of them play in the Xbox.

The DVD-R's I've burned with iDVD3 on my Albook 17 work fine in my Xbox, and my parent's DVD player (don't know the brand).

iDVD3 works for me if...

I don't leave any files it needs on my external firewire drive. So before building my iDVD project, I move (or export from FCP) onto my iMac's internal drive.

I think it's great and customers are amazed!

No problems here either, DVD's run on domestic players (inc my PS2) as well as other DVD drives in Macs and PCs.

I tend to use TDK "For Authoring" blue label discs for anyhting critical, otherwise generic DVD-r discs work fine.

iDVD and DVD studio pro both seem fine.

Have you been using DVD-R or DVD+R? iDVD and nearly all SuperDrives only allow DVD-R. Make sure, also, that you have it set to NTSC video format and not PAL, AND encoded for Region 1, otherwise it won't work. You've probably checked all this, but just a thought.
