idvd hell?

Picked up some apple DVD-rs to burn an iDVD project. This is my second try, first was with no name cheap DVD-rs resulting in 2 coasters. The movie burned all the way through but only plays about half the movie before screen freeze up.

I popped in an apple disc and hit burn, it is now 3 hours later and I'm on "stage 3 Asset encoding..." The movie was already compressed. Is it doing it again?

Am I trapped in iDVD hell?

Project is just under 4 gig.

Any ideas?

wow!

I was just about to cancel and it went to stage 4 Multiplexing and burning! 15 mins later I had my DVD.

Wow that was alot of encoding!

It plays through fine. Must have been the cheapo discs.

Let it burn.... iDVD4 encodes in a much higher quality than the previous versions... But the trade off is loooooonnnggggggg burn times... Specifically stage 3... Your final product will have pro level encoding ... Go to sleep, it will be done in the morning... lol.. I promise... I always burn at least 2 of everything because after the first one they will finish quickly... If it doesn't quit on you don't stop it...

cheap dvd-r media

I copied my finished project to desktop and tried to burn with Toast. It failed with the generic DVDs. They can't handle all of the data. They do work on smaller project between 1-2 gig.

I guess it pays to get name brand.

cheap DVD-Rs

I have had nothing but good luck with cheap DVDs. I order 100 packs of ProDisc brand DVDs from Rima.com for only $58! They are a good company and ship quickly. On my current 100 pack of Prodisc DVDs, I have burned about 65 or so with only 2 coasters, and these have all burned flawlessy at 4x, under 15 minutes to burn (after encoding, of course). I have tested these DVDs in my Playstation 2, APEX TV/DVD combo, and my Onkyo DVD Changer (which is usually picky about what DVD media it likes to read). I have also heard reports from several customers saying that they work well. Anyway, you may want to give this store a look for your DVDs.

Pop a disc in your player a year or two from now and see if they still work.
